Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty)
Rhinoplasty patients comprise about 25 % of all plastic surgery patients. Usually people want to have a smaller, narrower and straighter nose with a nasal tip slightly raised up. Rhinoplasty allows not only aesthetic improvement of nasal shape imperfections, but also restoration of the compromised nasal airflow caused by congenital deviation of the nasal ceptum.
In case of severe septal deviation nasal passages may vary in size and shape resulting in breathing problems and visible asymmetry of the nose. In these cases rhinoplasty is usually combined with septoplasty, which implies straightening the septum and improving nasal airflow.
Nose surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Three to four days postoperative hospital stay is usually required. Postoperative period is generally painless, except for some discomfort due to nasal pledgets that obstruct airflow before they are removed at 1-3 days. External nasal splint is removed at 6-10 days postoperatively. With dressings removed the nose looks quite normally, as if it wasn't operated. At two weeks postoperatively the nose appears to look more aesthetically pleasing compared to preoperative view, but still not so good as upon completion of recovery period and healing process.
Nasal reshaping is recommended only after nasal skeletal structure formation has completed. Female patients under 15-16 y.o. and male patients under 17 y.o. are not recommended to undergo nose surgery. In some cases rhinoplasty can be combined with mentoplasty, as an adequate chin shape and projection contribute significantly to aesthetically pleasing facial proportions both in frontal and profile views.
Successful nose surgery may produce an absolutely stunning effect. Nasal shape refinements may dramatically improve facial proportions, visually widen eyes, change facial expression making a female face look more feminine and younger and even might open a new career potential for someone!
